Organizational Overview
Four Corners ParaSport is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Kirtland, New Mexico, serving individuals with physical disabilities across the Four Corners region of New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado.
Founded as an independent affiliate of the Tribal Adaptive Organization, Four Corners ParaSport was created to address a critical regional gap: the lack of consistent, community-based parasport and adaptive recreation opportunities for people with disabilities living in rural and Tribal communities Four Corners ParaSport Original….
While many urban areas benefit from established adaptive sports programs, individuals with physical disabilities in the Four Corners region often face geographic isolation, limited transportation, high poverty rates, and a lack of accessible facilities or trained coaches. As a result, many never have the opportunity to identify as athletes or access the well-documented health, educational, and employment benefits of sport participation.
Four Corners ParaSport exists to change that reality
Why Four Corners Parasports is Needed
The Four Corners region is predominantly rural and home to a significant number of Tribal Nations and underserved communities. Individuals with physical disabilities in this region experience:
- Limited access to adaptive sports and recreation programs
- Higher rates of poverty and unemployment
- Fewer accessible facilities and transportation options
- Increased risk of social isolation, secondary health conditions, and poor mental health outcomes
Research and lived experience consistently show that participation in parasports leads to improved physical health, increased independence, stronger mental health, and better educational and employment outcomes. Yet these opportunities remain largely unavailable to people with disabilities living outside major metropolitan areas.
Four Corners ParaSport addresses this inequity by bringing adaptive sports directly into rural and Tribal communities, building local capacity, and creating sustainable, place-based programs rather than requiring individuals to travel long distances or relocate to access opportunity
